Chad Smith (born October 25, 1961) is an American musician best known as the drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, a band he joined in 1988. Under his tenure, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. Beyond the Chili Peppers, Smith is a member of the hard rock supergroup Chickenfoot, formed in 2008, and the instrumental project Bombastic Meatbats, launched in 2007.

Widely regarded as one of rock’s most accomplished drummers, Smith has recorded with legendary artists such as Johnny Cash, Glenn Hughes, John Fogerty, The Dixie Chicks, Jennifer Nettles, Kid Rock, and Jake Bugg, among others. In 2010, Smith collaborated with Dick Van Dyke and Leslie Bixler on the critically acclaimed children’s album Rhythm Train, where he showcased his versatility as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist.

Accolades and Recognition

In 2013, Spin Magazine ranked Smith #10 on their list of “100 Greatest Drummers of Alternative Music”, while readers of Rhythm Magazine named Smith and Flea, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ bassist, as the fourth-greatest rhythm section of all time.

Charity Work and Advocacy

Smith is also known for his philanthropy, particularly his support for young musicians. He has actively lobbied for music education in U.S. public schools and regularly participates in charity events. His strong resemblance to comedian Will Ferrell sparked a playful public feud, culminating in a drum battle for charity on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Other Ventures

In addition to his music career, Smith is the host of Landmarks Live in Concert, a PBS series launched in 2017 that features live performances in iconic locations. His diverse projects and relentless passion for music have solidified his reputation as one of the most dynamic figures in rock and beyond.
